Swan 350 circa 1966 |
I checked into the Swan Tech Net today and was told the S/N of this radio (C 618852) was manufactured in 1966 and that the radio was produced from 1964 to 1967. This one was late enough to have the one piece xtal filter instead of sockets for the individual crystals that the early ones had. During testing I measured the B+ ripple at about 3v. Stu K4BOV said that the it should probably be less than 1v so the filters are a bit weak. Stu suggested to use 80-220 mfd caps rated at, at least 350.
The Swan Tech Net is on Sat PM at 2:30-3:30 or so on 7235. Check it out sometime if you are interested in these oldies.

This was my first QRO radio. Purchased a dead one as a teen and got it back on the air for less than $100 total. Still have and use it, though it sat in a box for nearly 30 years and probably could use some sprucing up. Big power on some bands with new tubes.
My first QRO radio (first radio was a HW-8). Purchased around 1979/80 from a ham in the next town who was going to art school in France and had to get rid of it. When I arrived, he couldn't get it to power up. Told him I couldn't buy it w/o knowing what was wrong. He told me he was leaving in 2 days and to make an offer. It went home with me for $50 including an Astatic D104 mic and matching speaker/power supply. Cost was another $50 to get it back on the air. Still have it and use it. Sat in storage for nearly 30 years until 2011.
